What does this test measure?

The GAD-7 is a seven-question questionnaire published by Spitzer and colleagues in 2006. It measures how severe anxiety symptoms such as uncontrollable worry, tension and restlessness have been over the past two weeks, and is one of the most widely used anxiety screeners worldwide.

What does the result mean?

Scores range from 0 to 21. In the original study, 5, 10 and 15 mark mild, moderate and severe anxiety. A score of 10 or more is usually a good reason for a professional assessment.

Limits of this test

The GAD-7 was built for generalised anxiety and does not fully cover panic attacks, social anxiety or OCD. Some physical conditions and medications can also cause anxiety-like symptoms.

When is it worth talking to a professional?

If symptoms have lasted several weeks or affect your work, studies, sleep or relationships, talking to a psychologist, psychotherapist or doctor can help. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I have anxiety?

Occasional worry is normal. If worry continues most days, is hard to control and comes with tension, restlessness, fatigue or sleep problems, the GAD-7 can give a first picture, but only a professional can diagnose.

Is the anxiety test free?

Yes. The test is free, available in Persian, English and German, and needs no sign-up.

Are my answers stored?

No. Your answers are processed only in your browser and are not stored on Emotral servers. You do not need an account to take the test.
