Therapist Who Is a PhD Candidate in Psychology: What It Means

A PhD candidate has started a doctoral programme, usually completed the main coursework and exams, and is now working on research and writing the thesis, but has not yet been awarded the doctorate.

Many PhD candidates already hold a master's degree and have therapy experience. The title shows the person is in advanced training, but their ability as a therapist depends more on their specialisation, clinical training and experience than on their stage of study.

Who may it suit?

  • People looking for a therapist who is current and engaged with new research
  • Those whose concern falls within the therapist's area of training and experience
  • People for whom the therapeutic relationship and shared culture matter more than titles
  • Anyone who wants to start therapy with clear steps

Something else may fit better if…

  • Need for a medical assessment or medication: a psychiatrist
  • Very complex concerns that may call for a therapist with long experience in that specific area

How does it work?

Like other psychologists, a PhD candidate works through conversation: an initial assessment, agreeing on goals and therapy using the method they are trained in. They are not physicians and do not prescribe medication.

In many systems therapists still in training work under supervision or consult a clinical supervisor. Whether a PhD candidate may practise independently where you live depends on that country's rules and on their earlier qualifications.

A brief comparison: a completed PhD means the research is finished and the degree awarded; a psychiatrist is a physician who can prescribe; a counsellor focuses on life and relationship issues. Asking a therapist about their degree, specialisation and experience is completely normal.

What to expect in online sessions

Online sessions often last about fifty minutes to an hour and are usually weekly or every two weeks. The structure is much the same as with other psychologists.

As with any therapy, progress is gradual and depends on the relationship and shared effort. No outcome is guaranteed, and if the fit does not feel right it is normal to say so.

Examples

Examples are fictional and illustrative.

A therapist who speaks your language in Australia

Roozbeh lives in Melbourne and wants to talk with someone who speaks Persian and understands migrant life. He finds a therapist who is a PhD candidate and has worked with anxiety for years. Before starting, he asks about their experience and clinical supervision. This is a fictional example.

Asking before booking

Azadeh is not sure what "PhD candidate" means. In an introductory session she asks which degrees the therapist holds and how many years they have practised. This story is invented.

The relationship comes first

Sina once saw a therapist with a higher title but never felt at ease. Now he works with a therapist who is a PhD candidate and feels heard. This example is for illustration only.

Frequently asked questions

Can a PhD candidate provide therapy?

That depends on their earlier qualifications and the rules in your country. Many candidates hold a master's degree and have therapy experience; you can ask the therapist directly.

How is a PhD candidate different from a psychologist with a PhD?

A psychologist with a PhD has finished the doctoral research and received the degree. A PhD candidate is still completing that stage.

Is the quality of work lower?

Not necessarily. Clinical experience, training in a suitable method and the therapeutic relationship often matter as much as the final degree.

Can a PhD candidate prescribe medication?

No. Prescribing is done by physicians such as psychiatrists. You would be referred if needed.
