Online Marriage Counselling with a Persian-Speaking Therapist

Every shared life has ups and downs, but sometimes arguments become repetitive, conversations end in silence or shouting, and partners feel they live side by side yet far apart. Emotional distance, disagreements about money, children, in-laws or household tasks are common reasons for this gap.

Migration can put particular pressure on a relationship: one partner finds work sooner while the other feels left behind, roles shift and family support is out of reach. Marriage counselling is a place where both people can be heard and, with a neutral person's help, find a new way of being together.

Who may it suit?

  • Your arguments repeat and never get resolved
  • You feel distant from your partner or the relationship has grown cold
  • You disagree seriously about money, children or families
  • Your relationship changed after migrating or having a child
  • You are unsure whether to continue or end the relationship
  • You want to strengthen your relationship before marriage

Something else may fit better if…

  • If there is physical violence, threats or fear of your partner, joint sessions may not be safe; safety comes first, and you can contact the police or a domestic violence service
  • If either of you has thoughts of self-harm, contact emergency services or a crisis line first

How does it work?

In couples counselling the therapist takes no side. Their role is to help you see the cycle you are both caught in, for example one pursues while the other withdraws, and the needs and feelings beneath those behaviours.

Approaches such as emotionally focused couples therapy and the Gottman method are common. Sessions practise calm conversation, listening without defending, expressing needs instead of blame, and repairing after an argument.

Sometimes one partner comes alone at first, and that can also help. The goal is not always to save the relationship at any cost; sometimes it is to reach a clear and respectful decision.

What to expect in online sessions

Couples sessions are online, and you can each join from home or even from two different cities or countries. Alongside joint sessions, the therapist may also hold one or two individual sessions with each partner.

Many couples feel calmer conversations within the first few weeks, while work on deeper patterns often takes several months. What is said stays confidential.

Examples

Examples are fictional and illustrative.

A new life in Toronto

Samira and Hamid moved to Canada two years ago. Hamid found work quickly, while Samira, who had a good job in Iran, stayed home and felt worthless. Their fights were about small things, but the roots ran deeper. In sessions they could talk about this loss and become a team again.

After the baby

Since their daughter was born, Nazanin and Pouya only talked about chores. In counselling they learned to make small moments for themselves and to express tiredness without blame.

The long silence

Farhad went silent in every argument, and his wife read it as indifference. The therapist helped them both see that the silence came from feeling overwhelmed, not from a lack of care.

Frequently asked questions

What if my partner will not come?

You can start on your own. Individual therapy focused on the relationship often helps change the whole relationship, and sometimes the partner joins later.

Will the counsellor tell us to separate or stay?

No. The therapist does not decide for you, but helps you both see more clearly and make an informed choice.

What if there is violence in the relationship?

If there is violence or fear, safety comes first and joint sessions may not be suitable. Contact the police or a support service; a therapist can help with a safety plan in individual sessions.

Do online couples sessions work?

Many couples find online sessions convenient, especially with busy work schedules or when living in two different cities.
